''I'm totally indifferent to nature. In the philosopher Hegel's time, the Swiss Alps were no longer considered a horror; instead they became sublime. But when Hegel was asked what he thought of them, he said,'whats all the fuss?' That's how I feel. Nature is meaningless and it's catastrophic.

Take Nepal, for example. After Western medicine was introduced there, the population grew so fast they didn't have enough fuel for heating. So people started cutting down trees. But that makes the snow in the hills melt much faster, which causes big floods every couple of years in Bangladesh. That sounds bad, but then a friend explained to me that a certain amount of flooding is necessary because it drowns the rats!

That is the sheer madness of nature.

When you think you've solved a problem, you can never be sure that you haven't just created another one.''
