Rapture : Sexual communication is an essential human characteristic, and is fundamental to both physical and emotional existence. Conventional reproduction unites parts of the male and female into a single organism of the child. This process continues with each parent bestowing a number of beliefs and ideas into their creation, which will form the basis of the child's contemplative reality. These are derivations of culture, both shared and individual, and the child is to greatest degree a sum of these parts. In an ideal world, even beliefs that conflict, will ultimately reconcile within the reproduced form.

However, a culture convoluted by widespread petroleum fetishism, will be marked by it's reliance on plasticity. It will content itself with forms that serve only to placate man's need for human interaction and communication. In the most crowded industrial communities, where the sun is dimmed by unbreathable air, people are more prone to stay inside than go out to see each other. And inside, plasticity can do nothing but breed itself. Identical figures share in their best and worst traits; apparent communication is only selfish pantomime. They are drawn together from a compulsion lacking purpose.

The use of black, this simplicity not so simple, is one of a cluster of renunciations made by painters in the period 1947-1953. By cutting down the number of colours, painters were able to increase their speed without loosing their control. Black, in large areas tends to read as a flat area, more so than other colours, and it has, when used in linear forms, an ineradicable connection with message-making, either writing or drawing. Thus, black was at the center of the widespread post-war desire to invest abstract art with a momentous object or, to put it the other way round, to have an expressive art not slowed down by the need to represent objects…Once drawings ceased to function as steps in an accent towards a finished painting, the equal status of sketch and painting had to follow. The extension of an aesthetics of the auto-graphic mark has destroyed the traditional idea of finish. Formality can no longer be achieved by working towards an agreed-on point of complexity. On the contrary, it is hard for the artist, and the spectator, to be sure now when a work of art is finished.

Spanish artist Santiago Sierra paid six unemployed young men in Cuba to take part in one of his installation pieces. The men were offered $30 each to participate. Sierra had the men tattooed – one straight, horizontal line reaching across each of their backs.

The effect of the tattoo may be somewhat overlooked, yet when noticed and fully understood, the artistic statement comments so powerfully on the beautiful and stark contrasts in cultural mindset of different peoples, which can allow (or force) young men such as these to be subject to permanent branding for minimal payment, and for the viewing pleasure and intellectual stimulation of educated peoples elsewhere.

Do we actually own this piece of art, how can we ever truly own a piece of art if we are not the creators of it.An in depth discussion which is not entirely relevant now.

All I am going to say is I don't feel like I own this piece, as the scrap of paper reads ( is this piece of the piece itself ? ) Moreover, I / we are the keepers of it, maybe even we are a part of it, but mainly we are looking after it for the Artist; we could never truly own it as we are not the creators.

Maybe we are part of it however, are we not in some sense part creators of the piece if we have adopted it as our own; thus owning it by definition.

Judging The Beautiful

Plato defined beauty as a 'property of intrinsic objects', which could be measured in 'purity, integrity, harmony and perfection'.

However, according to Immanuel Kant, the judgment of beauty is different from cognitive or moral judgement because it is effected subjectively, that is, exclusively in reference to the person making the judgement. 'A person who describes something as beautiful insists that everyone ought to give the object in question his approval and follow suit.' For a judgement to be truly 'aesthetic', rather than merely idiosyncratic, the person making the judgement must be adamant that their opinion be consensus.

The Critique of Judgement discusses four particular unique features of aesthetic judgements on the beautiful, subsequently dealing with the sublime. These particular unique features, called 'moments' are structured in often obscure ways.

The first moment: Aesthetic judgements are disinterested. Separated from the two types of interest in the way of being agreeable with the sensations and by the way of concepts of the good. Only aesthetic judgement is free of such interests.

The second moment: Aesthetic judgements behave universally, however, as judging the aesthetic is reflective, this would therefore, somehow make single concepts of 'beauty' universally accepted. Such truisms such as 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' is argued first of all, can not account for our experience of beauty itself, insofar as the tendency to see 'beauty' as if it were somehow in the object or the immediate experience of the object. Secondly, such a relativist view can not account for the social behaviour of our claims of what we find beautiful.

The third moment: Introduction of the problem of the purpose and purposiveness. An object's purpose is the concept according to which it was manufactured; purposiveness then, is the property of at least appearing to have been manufactured or designed. It is claimed that the beautiful has to be understood as purposive, but without any definite purpose. The purposiveness of art is more complicated, although such works may have had purposes behind their production, expressing a certain mood/communicate an idea, nevertheless, these may not be sufficient for the object to be beautiful.

The fourth moment: Aesthetic judgements must pass the test of necessity, effectively meaning 'according to principle'. Judgement does not either follow nor produce a determining concept of beauty, but exhausts itself in being exemplary precisely of an aesthetic judgement.

Kant described the ground upon which these judgements are made as 'common sense', by which he means a priori principle of our taste, that is of our feeling for what is beautiful. The four moments of the beautiful are said to be summed up in the idea of 'common sense', this 'common sense' depending upon the features of humans which make possible free choice and determinative experiences.
